British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."
During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
