The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
