Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
