The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the ability to contest certain decisions from the official, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
